So—like thousands of others—you’ve been laid off because the business you were working for has been ordered closed. Not only that, for the last couple of months, you were staying at home under shelter-in-place orders and are reacquainting yourself with the big yellow thing in the sky called the “sun.”
Now that shelter-in-place orders are being lifted and businesses are slowly reopening, you’ve probably noticed that postings are making their way back to the job boards. Now that it’s time to start looking for a job instead of binging on Netflix (or whatever your stress reliever of choice was), how do you put yourself in the best position to snag one of those jobs?
First and foremost, if you haven’t yet revamped your resume for your new job hunt, you’ll want to do so now to make sure you’ll be able to beat out other applicants. Remember, there will be hundreds—if not thousands—of people vying for the same job, so you want to have the edge with a professionally written resume and LinkedIn profile at the very minimum. A (very) short list of what your resume needs to ensure you get interviews includes:
- Needs to be keyword-aligned to the types of jobs you want to apply for, including “smart” and “stupid” keywords that are found in the job postings you want to apply to.
- Needs to have no more than 15 years of experience on it, including your most recent job, and each job should market you with quantifiable achievements.
- Needs to be properly formatted so it gets past the screening computers.
